Fire and Ice - Sketch

Description

This is a very rough concept sketch of something that's been spooking around in my head for a while now. So it's going to be scrapped eventually.

Right now I'm basically looking for possible critique on anatomy (didn't have a suitable pose reference at hand -.- ) and composition.

Also debating what medium to use for the finished image

Hey Jude! I talked with Angela about the characters here in hopes of understanding them better but here's my two cents. I know Ang is doing a redline for you (and I'll do one too if you like) but here are some of the things I see going on:

Anatomy Wise
-The wings. I know Ang is talking to you about this so I'm not even going to go there as it's not my area of expertise, save that something needs to be done with them I think.
-The guy's body seems to be on several different planes. His legs are facing one way, his waist another and his upper body back to the same way the legs are pointing. Your abs are great, but they are pointing at the viewer where as his legs and pecs are not.
-The girl is hidden mostly behind the guy here, and while it might be a compositional thing, you should still probably figure out where her body is behind him. Maybe sketch it out lightly on a sheet of tracing paper (or on a layer in PS if you want to tweak it digitally).
-The characters interaction is strange and uncomfortable looking. It is more likely that his right arm would be outside of the girl's arm that is trying to touch his face. Aside from what Ang has said about the perspectives (which is definitely something to think about), also consider what kind of pose each character is in and whether or not it would be comfortable and adjust their expressions/muscles/posture accordingly.
-A good reference website Ang has turned me onto is PoseManiacs.com It's 3-D models in all different types of poses, minus their skin so you can get a good idea of how the muscles are going to work. The super awesome thing about this website? You can ROTATE the models, it's so cool (and useful)! If that seems a bit too intimidating to try and process, look up good reference photos or even drawings of the same type of things you are looking to create in this piece (feet, hands, perspective, etc)
-Their head shapes are a bit strange. I'm assuming this will change as the piece progresses but I did want to point it out to you.
-The guys pecs are a bit round and there is something going on with his shoulder blade/back, as Ang has said/red lined so I won't go farther into that.

Composition
-I like the diagonal line you've got going on with the composition but I think it could be exagerrated a little farther. You could crop the image in a little more and make the characters more of a focus, for example. Right now it seems there is a lot of attention to the wings, and while that's all fine and dandy, keep in mind that it needs a purpose to be there. Also, composition is a personal choice, so don't take my word for it. Play around with it and see what gives you the most powerful presentation of the characters.

Ending Notes
To be honest, I'm not quite sure what message you're trying to get across to the viewer and I think that needs some attention. Ang has told me that the girl 'wears the pants' in the relationship so I think you need to make that more clear. Granted, the possessive hold on his jaw is a good start but here are some questions to think about, because when I see them in this pose I am a bit confused.

What is the action going on in the piece?
-Is she lifting him? Pulling him out of something? Stealing him away? Simply embracing him? Carressing him lovingly? Caressing him possesively? Is the guy enjoying her near him or is he fearful (right now he seems kind of concerned)?

Is there anything the viewer can understand about the characters (and/or their backgrounds) from the information we can see in this piece?
-One of them is an angel, one of them is a demon. What are the indicators of this? Are there meant to be any indicators?

What emotion are you trying to convey to the viewer?
-Is it one of love? Duality? Contradiction? Irony? Possession? Fear? Longing? etc.

I know that was a long boring crit but I hope it has been useful. I really think you can do great things with this piece, and it's on it's way nicely. Keep it up!
